TASTING NOTES
This Pinot Noir is made from grapes grown in Block 1 Napoleone Vineyard. The block is 35 years old and consists of MV6 Pinot Noir. The grapes were divided into two seperate ferments - one with 100% whole bunches, and the other with whole berries. The whole bunch component adds an aromatic lift to the wine, as well as a complex savoury element and structure.
Meanwhile, the whole berry portion contributes juicy fruits and fills out the palate. The ferments were carefully monitored, with gentle pumping over twice a day to ensure a healthy ferment and subtle tannin extraction. The wine was then stored in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques before being ages for 12 months in oak and bottled. 2021 was a benchmark vintage for the Yarra Valley, producing exception wines across all varieties, especially Pinot Noir. A wet winter and cool start to the growing season ensured a healthy canopy and great fruit set. After a wet January, February was cool and dry, allowing for slow ripening. This extra time on the vine allows the fruit to retain vibrant acid and develop complex flavour and supple tannin.
