The epitome of Australian Chardonnay—and arguably the greatest wine made in our country. Polarising opinion or simply my personal truth? Either way, Giaconda Chardonnay has earned its place as a benchmark, and this event offers the rare chance to experience it as never before in Sydney.
For me, Giaconda is the pinnacle of white wine in Australia, revered both at home and abroad. Crafted in the tiny town of Beechworth, this wine carries not just a reputation but a sense of place and history. Beechworth’s quiet cobblestones, gold rush stories, and understated vineyards are a world away from Sydney’s bustle—but on this night, they’ll meet in spectacular fashion.
When I secured a pristine vertical of Giaconda Chardonnay from 2012 through to the latest 2023 release—alongside a mystery extra vintage—I knew it was something that had to be shared. To my knowledge, such a tasting has never been held in Sydney, and I’m thrilled to make it happen at Soluna, an intimate venue perfectly suited to the occasion.
Each of the 15 guests will have 12 Riedel Montrachet glasses set before them, one for each vintage, ready for 50ml pours at their ideal serving temperature. The line-up will be poured from youngest to oldest, allowing the wines to evolve in the glass, before guests revisit the flight in reverse, tracing the story of Giaconda over more than a decade of vintages.
From the crystalline precision of the 2012, through the reductive tension of the 2015, to the legendary 2021 (Australia’s first white wine to score 100 points with Wine Advocate), every vintage reveals something unique. The recently released 2023 will close the set, complemented by one mystery bottle held back especially for this night.
